A Cairo prosecutor referred on Wednesday an employee at a popular Cairo restaurant to court on charges of intentional murder for the killing of a client, 24-year-old Mohamed Bayoumi, after a row about paying his bill.
Both the owner and manager of the Keif restaurant in Heliopolis’s El-Nozha district were also referred to court on charges of detaining the customers, who had just finished watching the Egypt-Cameroon game live at the venue, to collect unpaid bills.
Eight other employees were released without charges.
Sources told Ahram Online at the time that initial investigations showed the victim was struck with a chair and stabbed by the defendant following a row with the restaurant owner over the cheque after the owner ordered that the doors closed until all customers settle their bills.
Bayoumi, a recent graduate with a business degree, died of his injuries shortly after the stabbing.
The killing of the young man, who was watching the football match with his fiancée, stirred an outcry on social media.
Immediately after Bayoumi's murder, Security forces raided and closed over 30 unlicensed cafes in Cairo and Giza governorates over licensing violations.
Keif restaurant itself was also shuttered.
