San Francisco's 19-16 overtime win over the St. Louis Rams wasn't enough to save 49ers coach Jim Tomsula's job.
The 49ers announced that Tomsula had been fired shortly after they completed their disappointing 2015 campaign with a 5-11 record.
Tomsula had been head coach for just one season, taking over after the Niners "mutually parted" with Jim Harbaugh immediately after a season-ending win last season.
He had been with San Francisco as an assistant since 2007, after coaching in NFL Europe.
"Jimmy has been a valuable member of the 49ers organization for the last nine years," said 49ers chief executive Jed York in a statement posted on the team's website. "We all know he is a man of high character, and his contributions on the field and in our community have always been greatly appreciated."
Shortly before the announcement Tomsula was asked if he thought he deserved to keep his job.
"You're a coach," Tomsula said. "You always think that. How you think about that and those things is irrelevant."
