Real Madrid forward Jese has undergone "satisfactory" surgery on the knee ligament injury that has brought a premature end to his breakthrough season at the Bernabeu. The 21-year-old tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee early in Madrid's 3-1 UEFA Champions League victory over Schalke on Tuesday night, putting a dampener on their progression to the quarter-finals as they completed a 9-2 aggregate triumph. Jese travelled to Augsburg in Germany on Wednesday to undergo surgery at the clinic of knee specialist Dr. Ulrich Boenisch and is expected to return to Madrid in the coming days. A statement from his club confirmed: "Jese Rodriguez was admitted to the Hessingpark-Clinic in Augsburg by Dr Ulrich Boenisch and under the supervision of the Sanitas Medical Services-Real Madrid doctors Jesus Olmo and Francisco Morate. "The surgery, which was carried out satisfactorily, consisted of repairing the anterior cruciate ligament and damaged lateral meniscal in the player's right knee "The player will return to Madrid once he is discharged, which is expected to happen in the next few days." Jese sustained the injury after just two minutes of the last 16 second leg following an innocuous-looking tussle with Sead Kolasinac. He was carried off on a stretcher to be replaced by Gareth Bale before being taken away to hospital, where tests revealed the extent of the damage. Madrid have not yet estimated how long Jese is likely to be out for, although injuries of this kind tend to have a recovery period of at least six months. Jese had been enjoying a fine season at Madrid, and had scored five goals in his previous six starts for the club prior to being named in Carlo Ancelotti's first XI for the visit of Schalke. Such has been Jese's impact this season that he had been talked about as a possible contender to go to the FIFA World Cup™ with Spain, even though he has yet to make a senior appearance for his country.
