Novak Djokovic's beat Gilles Muller 6-3 6-4 to reach the third round of the BNP Paribas Paris Masters Championship.
Djokovic, whose world No 1 status is currently under threat from Andy Murray, returned to the tour after a lengthy spell away from the game.
Looking far from comfortable, he nevertheless beat Luxembourg's Gilles Muller in straight sets, shrugging aside a series of double faults to prevail 6-3 6-4. Novak Djokovic's will play with Bulgaria's Grigor Dimitrov in third round.
In another match, Lucas Pouille defeated Feliciano Lopez 6-7 (7-1) 6-3 6-4. Another France-Spain match-up produced the highest drama of the day. Gilles Simon saved three match points on the way to beating Roberto Bautista Agut 2-6 6-1 7-6 (8-6).
Marin Cilic, whose win last week in Basel took him one step closer to a place in London for the end of season Tour Finals, overcame fellow Croatian Ivo Karlovic 7-6 (9-7) 6-2. The big server faces David Goffin in the next round.
Goffin saw off Nicolas Mahut 7-6 (7-5) 6-3, has to beat Cilic and go onto win the tournament if he is to sneak into the draw in London, where only two spots remain.
