Williams driver Brazilian Pastor Maldonado was fifth fastest ahead of Briton Jenson Button of McLaren. Another strong performance from Japanese Kamui Kobayashi of Sauber saw him finish the session seventh fastest followed by Nico Rosberg of Mercedes. Mexican Sergio Perez followed in the second Sauber ahead of Scot Paul Di Resta who was tenth fastest. Seven times champion Michael Schumacher wound up 11th in the second Mercedes after the German suffered a gearbox problem midway through the session.
