World 100 metre freestyle champion James Magnussen has been named Australia's swimmer of the year at an awards ceremony in Sydney. Magnussen, 20, burst to international fame with two golds and a silver at this year’s world championships in Shanghai. He was Australia’s first men's 100m freestyle champion at the Olympics or world championships since Michael Wenden at the 1968 Mexico Olympics. Magnussen has become the favourite for next year's London Olympics 100m gold medal and has set his sights on breaking Brazilian Cesar Cielo's world record of 46.91 seconds.
