Two former winners of the Ruler of Sharjah Cup, the feature race of today's Sharjah Equestrian and Racing Club meeting, go head-to-head in what looks like an interesting renewal of the 1,700m handicap on dirt. Knife was a winner of the race 12 months ago for Al Ain-based handler Anthony Manuel while Musabah Al Muhairi's Bareq, the 2010 winner of the race, finished a close third. The pair appear to be the leading contenders for the Dh125,000 prize at the Al Tayer Motors-sponsored meeting. Knife was a winner of his previous start at Jebel Ali Racecourse and looks to be in good form to defend his crown in the feature race. Manuel, who has saddled 11 winners this season, was cautiously optimistic of his ward's chances and said: "This has been his target again since he won the race last year; he goes so well at Sharjah and that is always important. He probably faces a stiffer task this year but is in good form." Reigning champion jockey Wayne Smith rides Bareq. He said: "Hopefully the return to Sharjah and dirt will be in his favour as he has not really fired in his last two starts at Abu Dhabi." Bin Shamardal bids for a third course win in the 1,700m handicap for trainer Al Muhairi, when he takes on a full field of 15 rivals. Smith said: "He has been ultra-consistent this season and seems to love the Sharjah surface."
