Al Wakrah took on Al Sailiya for a bottom of the table clash in round 23 of the Qatar Stars League. The visitors - Sailiya travelled down to Al Wakrah’s Saoud Abdulrahman stadium but the home side who were in the relegation zone were not going to give up without a fight as they looked to secure another year in the QSL.
The first goal of the night was a long time coming, in the 42nd minute a cross from the left found Saez, the Argentine striker sent a overhead kick to teammate Waleed Hamza who tapped in from close range.
Then in the 46th minute of the first half Wakrah doubled their lead with a wonderful individual effort by Ahmed Fadel Hasaba that started on the edge of the box. And that’s how it ended as both teams went into the tunnel at half time.
Just three minutes into the second half and Al Wakrah carried on where they had left off. Saez was at it again as he went on a counter attack through the middle. He laid off a pass to Mohsine Moutaouali who sent a low cross from the right to Waleed Hamzah, the striker grabbing his second goal of the night.
From then on the momentum swung in Sailiya’s direction as they pressured to get their first goal of the game. It came in the 57th minute courtesy of a great solo effort from Ilunga Diba. The forward cut in from the right and hit a beautiful curling effort with his left foot past keeper Hassan Idriss Dicko.
Diba’s second goal came from a terrible pass from Hasaba who gave it straight to the opposition. Majid Abdulla Siddiq sent a ball over the top, Diba managed to get between defence and keeper as he steered a looping header into the empty goal.
Wakrah were starting to show signs of cracking as they continued to lose the balls in dangerous areas.
Eventually the referee blew the whistle for full time as Wakrah took all three points and moved out of the relegation zone once more.
