Teddy Sheringham's first crack at management came to an abrupt end on Monday when the former Manchester United star was sacked by fourth tier Stevenage.
Sheringham had high hopes of launching a successful managerial career when he took charge of the League Two club in May.
But, despite a glittering playing career that including three Premier League titles with United and a goal-scoring contribution to their epic 1999 Champions League final win over Bayern Munich, the ex-Tottenham and England striker struggled to transform Stevenage's fortunes and leaves with the team languishing in 19th place.
They managed just six wins from 29 games under Sheringham's leadership and Saturday's 2-1 defeat at fellow strugglers York proved the final straw for Stevenage chairman Phil Wallace.
"Teddy has had the worst luck I've seen in the 16 years I've owned the football club. Normally we'd have one or two major ops on key players in a season but we've had more this season than the last three combined," Wallace said.
"You also occasionally lose points in the last few minutes of games but we've been in this situation in four of the last eight matches. However, we are where we are and the club have to make a change.
"Teddy came in having to work on a lower budget than we've had before and the lack of available funds has made it difficult to get the players he'd like. He's given it his all but it hasn't worked and now we have to thank him for his efforts and move on."
