Cristiano Ronaldo scored a hat-trick as Real Madrid inflicted a 5-0 Primera Division defeat on Athletic Bilbao.
Karim Benzema scored the other two goals as Real moved ahead of city rivals Atletico into fourth place in the table. Ronaldo set the ball rolling in the third minute and Benzema doubled the lead shortly before half-time. Each scored again to make it 4-0 with 20 minutes remaining and Ronaldo's late third rounded off the rout in front of 77,987 fans in a delighted Bernabeu.
Stephane Mbia netted a brace as Sevilla returned to winning ways with a comfortable 4-1 victory over basement boys Deportivo La Coruna at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan. Mbia got the ball rolling midway through the first half before Haris Medunjanin made it all square at the break.
But Carlos Bacca, Mbia with his second and Vitolo sealed the win for Unai Emery's side. Bacca missed a 69th-minute penalty but it did not take the gloss off their triumph which moved them up to third in the table, while struggling Depor remain bottom with just four points from their opening seven games.
Ten-man Celta Vigo suffered their first defeat of the season as Moi Gomez's quickfire brace helped Villarreal to a 3-1 victory at Balaidos. Gomez struck in the 32nd and 34th minutes before Joaquin Larrivey's reply a minute prior to the interval.
The hosts then had Andreu Fontas dismissed for a second bookable offence with four minutes to go and a stoppage-time Mario effort subsequently wrapped up the three points for the Yellow Submarine. They are up to seventh in the table, a place and a point behind Celta.
Espanyol overpowered Real Sociedad 2-0 at El Prat to pick up a second straight home victory and move up to eighth place. Lucas Vazquez put the hosts in front inside seven minutes and substitute Christian Stuani made sure of the points with a close-range finish in stoppage time.
