Gabriel Calderon was appointed as the new coach of Bani Yas on Wednesday, club officials have confirmed. The 51-year-old Argentine has signed a contract until the end of the season with a view to extending his stay further. He succeeds the Iraq 2007 Asia Cup-winning coach Jorvan Vieira, who was sacked after collecting just one point from the club's first three etisalat Pro League games and one point from the first four cup ties. Calderon quickly emerged as a front-runner in the negotiations ahead of Levir Culpi, Dunga and Hassan Shehata and is held in high esteem regionally since winning last year's Saudi League and President's Cup double with Al Hilal. He achieved the league title at Al Hilal without losing a single match and in 2009 he also led Al Ittihad to the same honour. Having also managed the Saudi and Oman national teams after French and Swiss clubs Caen and Lausanne respectively, Calderon was also a candidate to replace Srecko Katanec as UAE national coach based on his experience and availability. Calderon is expected to watch from the stands as Bani Yas take on Al Shabab away in an etisalat Pro League match tomorrow. Back from break Following a 22-day stoppage, the Pro League will resume tonight. The break for internationals and etisalat Cup matches helped clubs iron out flaws and bring in new technical staff. The matches start in Ras Al Khaimah, where struggling Emirates host second-placed Al Wasl, who will have to cope without coach Diego Maradona as he is still in Argentina following the death of his mother. "We would like to win the match to dedicate it to our coach as a gesture of condolence," Eisa Ali, the team's captain, said yesterday. "Emirates are not a pushover, especially at home, but we will do our best." Reigning champions and league leaders Al Jazira will go to Ajman, while tonight's late show will be the Dubai derby between Al Nasr and Al Ahli. The match will give Al Ahli's new manager Quique Sanchez Flores his first taste of the league, but he will be without defender Abdul Aziz Haikal and striker Ahmad Khalil, who are with the UAE's Olympic team. Tomorrow sees Al Wahda host Dubai, Bani Yas go to Al Shabab and Al Ain welcome Sharjah.
