Arsenal were completely destroyed Wednesday by Bayern Munich in the second half, losing 1-5 in the last 16 of the Champions League.
Bayern were stronger from the off and took the lead thanks to a beauty of a curler from Arjen Robben. Bayern continued to dominate the game even after taking the lead until Arsenal got a penalty out of the blue. The referee adjudged Robert Lewandowski to have tripped Arsenal defender Laurent Koscielny in the box. Even then, Alexis Sanchez failed to convert with Manuel Neuer making the save. The ball rebounded to the Chilean with the goal as good as empty, but he miskicked the ball. He then controlled the miskick on his chest before directing the ball past five Bayern players into the net. Arsenal threatened a few more times in the first half, with Xerdan Shaqiri coming closest. His effort however was straight at the goal keeper. The first half ended all square.
The second half was all Bayern as Arsenal fell apart. Lewandowski made up for conceding the penalty and scored a header. Thiago Alcantara, who bossed the midfield, scored a brace and Thomas Muller added one of his own to give Bayern a famous 5-1 win against Arsenal.
The Londoners now need to beat Bayern 4-0 at home to move to the quarter-finals of the competition. Today's other match saw Real Madrid comeback from a goal down to win at home 3-1 against Napoli.
