Students clash with riot police Rome - Arab Today Student demonstrators clashed with police in Milan on Friday as they marched through the city protesting the quality of Italian public schools, The Italian Insider reported. The students have mobilised to bring attention to the deteriorating Italian school system, which they believe is critically underfunded. Student protests are also occurring in over 80 other cities across Italy. The students believe that government funding has been misallocated since funding for education is quite minimal while the country continues to waste financial resources on things like the military. The Coordinator of the National Union of Students, Roberto Campanelli, spoke of the national problem of underfunding public schools, citing that students are ignored while government funding goes to "protecting speculators and large estates." He stated that "there is no more time to waste with austerity policies." In Milan, students gathered in the Piaza Cairoli and proceeded to march through the city's streets, impeding the flow of traffic. As they marched, many set of firecrackers and smoke bombs, while others threw eggs. These actions sparked tensions with police, but the protests have continued. Source: MENA
