Al Azhar Grand Imam Ahmed el Tayyeb on Wednesday stressed that the world's top Sunni Islamic authority is keen on promoting world peace and spreading a culture of tolerance and coexistence.
The Grand Imam made the remarks in a meeting with Egypt's Consul General in Chicago Mohamed Abu el Dahab, in which they discussed aspects of cooperation between Al Azhar and the consulate.
El Tayyeb stressed al Azhar's readiness to provide full support to the Egyptian Consulate in Chicago in its fight against extremist and erroneous ideologies that hurt Islam in the American society.
Abu el Dahab, for his part, briefed the imam on the conditions of the Muslim community in Chicago.
He hailed the role exerted by al Azhar and el Tayyeb in encountering all the deviant currents and groups and portraying the noble values of Islam that reject extremism and militancy.
