The committee for the next iteration of the Abraaj Group Art Prize was announced on Sunday, August 23. The Art Dubai team made the announcement of the jury for the eighth and ninth editions of the prize, which will include leading international curators Hans Ulrich Obrist, Defne Ayas and Sandhini Poddar.
Obrist is a prestigious art curator, critic and historian of art who is also co-director of Exhibitions and Programmes and Director of International Projects at the Serpentine Gallery in London. Ayas is the Director of the Witte de With Centre for Contemporary Art in Rotterdam and Poddar is a Mumbai-based art historian as well as being an adjunct curator at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum working on special projects in New York and Abu Dhabi.
The jury's role is to review and critique artists' applications and to select a guest curator who will work closely with three selected artists to develop a group exhibition that will be shown in Art Dubai next year from March 16-19.
The winning artist will be awarded a US$100,000 commission to produce work for the fair and the commissioned works go on to become part of the Abraaj Group Art Prize Collection, which is regularly loaned to major museum and touring exhibitions.
Dana Farouki, a curator and patron of the arts is the chair of the jury. She says: The 2016 jury of the Abraaj Group Art Prize consists of an exceptional group of celebrated practitioners and curators from around the globe. With their extensive experience and diverse perspectives, they will ensure a very promising commission for the prize.”
The news comes just a week before the open call is for the 2016 comes to a close. The deadline for artists to apply for that is August 31.
