Iran's current Chairman of the Expediency Council Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani died today.
According to Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), Rafsanjani was hospitalized due to heart attack in a state-run hospital in the Iranian capital earlier in the day.
Rafsanjani served as president from 1989 to 1997. After losing the presidential elections to Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Rafsanjani was appointed head of the Expediency Council, which tries to resolve disputes between parliament and the Guardian Council.
