Madison Square Garden may have to move off Penn Station
One of New York City’s most iconic landmarks, Madison Square Garden, has been given 10 years' notice to find a new home.
City Council members voted in near unanimity
(47 to 1) to limit the arena’s permit, a move that will pave the way for major upgrades and renovations at Penn Station, the heart of the city’s transportation system.
Madison Square Garden, which is located above the transport hub, is home to the city’s major sports teams including the NBA’s New York Knicks and the NHL’s New York Rangers and has played host to the world’s most famous artists.
It’s a bitter decision for the entertainment venue, which is is currently undergoing a $1 billion overhaul to upgrade the building that’s been operating on Seventh Avenue since 1968.
The Garden, which also calls itself the “world’s most famous arena,” is the only stage that has played host to every member of The Beatles post-breakup, with all four musicians playing solo concerts there.
Meanwhile, the venue named Michael Jackson's 1988 Bad World Tour as the greatest event ever held at the arena.
