Biram Ould Dah Abeid Nouakchott – Mohamed Abeid Sherif In a statement to ‘Arabstoday’, Biram Ould Dah Abeid – president of the Initiative for the Resurgence of the Abolitionist Movement in Mauritanta (IRA) – said that his meeting with leader of the opposition party Rally of Democratic Forces (RFD), Ahmed Ould Daddah, was positive, stressing that they “reviewed the scene in Mauritania under the regime of Ould Abdel Aziz.” Biram described the current regime as “tyrannical”, pointing out that the “leader of opposition Ould Daddah confirmed his willingness to cooperate with the initiative, and promised to form a committee to follow up with points of agreement.” “The aim of the series of meetings conducted by [his] human rights organization is to ease the atmosphere between the organization and the opposition parties, which took the initiative to invite the movement for discussion and convergence of ideas,” Biram added. He stressed that the reason behind this step is the “obvious systematic targeting of Aziz’s regime to the movement,” giving as example the regime’s campaigns of releasing permits to other organizations to oppose his own and distort its struggle. He said that the regime’s attempts intentions are “open to the public” and that it would not “discourage them from carrying out their peaceful struggle until justice is served.” Meanwhile, Ould Daddah, head of RFD, renewed his call for Mauritanian President Mohammed Ould Abdel Aziz to step down. “Personally, I do not have any hope that Ould Abdel Aziz can lead any reform. And I do not have the least doubt of his inability and his lack of interest,” he stated, adding that it is clear to him that Abdel Aziz is a typical military example, and his country has been under military rule since 1978.
