Abdel-Aal beat the competition by just one vote Cairo – Akram Ali Sayed Abdel-Aal has won leadership elections for Egypt’s left-wing National Progressive Unionist Party (NPUP), succeeding Refaat el-Said after marginally gaining the largest majority of the vote. The supervising committee announced Abdel-Aal’s victory, reportedly beating his main competitor Hussein Abdel-Razek by one vote to take the position of party chairman. Abdel-Aal gained 239 votes, beating Abdel-Razek’s 238 votes. NPUP Central Committee members will announce the formal results of the election in the next few days.
