A man accused of attempting to kill his roommate told a court he was chopping onions when the victim attacked him and fell onto the knife.
"We were both consuming alcohol at the time and I was chopping onions, then a discussion turned into an argument then into a fight during which he fell on the knife, but I didn’t stab him nor did I intend to kill him," said the 22-year-old Indian defendant when he appeared in Dubai Criminal Court.
The incident happened at 8pm on September 11 last year in men’s accommodation in Al Qusais.
"I was on my bed when I heard the defendant screaming at the victim using foul language and telling him that he won’t leave him alone, then I noticed the man was holding his tummy in pain, I then spotted the blood," said a 37-year-old Indian witness, who added that the defendant chased the victim out of the room while holding the knife.
"When I got outside the victim was bleeding and unconscious on the floor while the defendant was restrained by the supervisor who called police."
The victim was taken to hospital where life-saving surgery was carried out.
The defendant denied attempted murder but admitted consuming alcohol.
