Juan Martin del Potro defeated Spain's Roberto Bautista Agut 7-5, 7-6 (7/4) to set-up a blockbuster Olympic Games men's tennis semi-final clash against Rafael Nadal on Friday.
The giant Argentine, who knocked out world number one Novak Djokovic in the first round, wept in his courtside chair at the end of the quarter-final.
The former US Open champion fired 42 winners in his win but seemed to be struggling with his fitness in the closing stages.
That wasn't too surprising for a player who has undergone a series of wrist surgeries and missed most of the last two seasons, leading to his current ranking slump at 141 in the world.
