Messi dedicated the award to his teammates, saying "it is a prize for scoring goals, but without my teammates I couldn't have scored them." The 25-year-old beat his Spanish league rival Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo of Real Madrid by four goals to take the honour. Ronaldo had taken the previous 2010-2011 accolade, scoring 40 goals for his club.
