The former president of Al Ahly club, Hassan Hamdy , expressed his happiness after Confederation of African Football's(CAF) decision to honor him in the general assembly in March 17, in Ethiopia, in recognition of his contribution to the development of African football and the success of Al Ahly under his leadership.
Hamdy will be the first Egyptian football club president to receive the CAF’s golden merit as a tribute to his past achievements with the Red Devils.
Hamdy said, in an interview with Arabs Today,that this honoring is not only for himself, but also for Al Ahly club, and an appreciation for the teams' traditions, principles, players, coaches and fans.
"This honoring relates to the achievements and tournaments have been achieved through collective work, in which all of the club's elements contributed in," he added.
Hamdy thanked the African Union and its leaders on this kind gesture, noting that Al Ahly deserves the real honor, and he prouds of belonging to it and spending nearly 55 years between its walls.
He added that this honor confirms the leadership of the Egyptian sports in the African continent.
Hamdy was the 12th and president of the Egyptian Al-Ahly Sporting Club. He was the vice president of the club during Saleh Selim's presidency and the chairman of Al-Ahram advertising agency which is part of the Al-Ahram association and the president of the International Advertising Association (IAA)'s Cairo branch.
After the death of Saleh Selim on May 6, 2002, Hassan Hamdy submitted a nomination for the presidency. The club members renewed their confidence in Hasan Hamdy in the elections of December 17, 2004. This was announced by the overwhelming support for Hamdy and the full list of the club's leadership of the new electoral witness celebrate National occasion of the centenary of the foundation.
During his presidency, Al Ahly broke African Champions League records after winning the title five times in nine years to become the most successful club in the competition’s history with a total of eight cups, in addition to qualifying to the FIFA Club World Cup five times.
