A militant of Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) outfit was killed and an Indian army trooper wounded Saturday in an ongoing gunfight between Indian troops and the militants in Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said.
The gunfight broke out early Saturday when a joint contingents of Indian army and police cordoned off village Aaripal in Tral area, about 60 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.
"A foreign militant was today gunned down in a gunfight at Aaripal in Tral of Pulwama district and a trooper was also wounded in the stand off," a senior police officer, Wahid Shah, told media. "The militants present in the house fired at army and police contingents as they were trying to cordon it."
Police sources said the other militants managed to break off the cordon and escaped into forest area.
"The remaining militants managed to escape from the house during the exchange of fire," said a police officer.
Police and Indian army officials said the operation was carried out on specific intelligence inputs about presence of militants in the area.
"We had inputs that three militants were present in the house," the officer said. "The operation is under way and further details are awaited."
The gunfight comes a day after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid a day long visit to the restive region.
The slain militant, a police spokesman said, was identified as Madani, a Pakistani resident, who according to the police was involved in many militant activities.
