Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Kasr El Aini, Dr Maher Abdel Wahab shares top tips on dealing with menstrual cycle pain. “Experiencing pain is very normal,” Dr Maher explains, “but it is advisable to get as much rest as possible if you are experiencing it.” To help overcome pain, Dr Maher recommends painkillers but also looks into particular foods which can perpetuate pain rather than eradicate it. “Try to avoid chocolate and soft drinks and opt for more grains, such as wheat, lentils and beans,” she explains, “and a warm bath can also be helpful.” Dr Maher recommends sleeping on one side with knees bent to aid in relieving pain whilst you sleep. Dr Maher stressed the importance of tracking ones menstrual cycle, especially during pregnancy, to become more familiar and aware of the fertility process. The average menstrual cycle is between 28 to 32 days and past menstrual cycles work as a guide for estimating fertile times. Dr Maher advises intercourse every two days during the fertilisation process to increase chances of becoming pregnant.
