The State of Qatar has established itself as a global role model in terms of human rights, which have become a symbol of civilization, HE Advisory Council Deputy Speaker Issa bin Rabia Al Kuwari said.
Addressing the 136th general assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), currently underway in the Bangladeshi capital of Dhaka, HE Al Kuwari said Qatar has worked to develop the appropriate circumstances for promoting women's participation in the public sphere, noting that women are now involved in the different work fields and assumed ministerial, judicial and administrative positions, while also becoming elected members of the Central Municipal Council.
He added that the country has hosted regional and international conferences and meetings that serve the international society and go in line with the goals of IPU and the United Nations.
HE Al Kuwari stressed that Qatar's commitment to participate in the events of IPU and other parliamentarian organizations is part of its constant interaction with the international society so as to spread peace, reiterate the rule of law and equality, and eliminate the reasons of conflicts in order to achieve the goals that serve societies.
In his speech, the deputy speaker called on IPU members to take a firm stance and urge the international society to pressure Israel into complying with international legitimacy resolutions and peace initiatives related to the Palestinian issue so as to achieve just peace in the Middle East, while the Palestinian people attain their legitimate rights in establishing their independent state with Jerusalem as its capital.
In this regard, HE Al Kuwari pointed to the tragedies of the Palestinian people and what they suffer in terms of loss of rights, detention, home demolishing, storming into Al Aqsa Mosque, and the blockade of Gaza Strip for years by an occupation force that has no regard for international conventions and moral standards.
He highlighted the serious developments due to the escalating violence and their repercussions on innocents and peace-loving people. He stressed that coexistence among peoples happens through establishing bridges and dialogue among civilizations and cultures as the way towards breaking barriers and disseminating tolerance.
Speaking about sustainable development, HE Al Kuwari said its definition is comprehensive and is related to the continuity of the economic, social, institutional and environmental sides of society in a way that enables it to address their needs and express their existence while preserving biodiversity and the sustainability of positive relations between the human and biological systems so that future generations would live a decent life.
HE the deputy speaker of the Advisory Council expressed hope that the meetings will achieve their objectives and come out with results that live up to the ambitions of member states and their peoples, and help in enhancing joint international parliamentary work.
The meetings will see deputies of the 136th general assembly chairman elected, while a general discussion will be held on the handling of inequality in welfare and dignity as well as the stance of parliamentarians towards foreign intervention in domestic affairs of sovereign states, and other relevant issues.
