Assistant Director of Legal Affairs Department of the Ministry of Interior (MoI) Salem Saqr Al Muraikhi stressed today on the importance of the joint meeting of experts and representatives from the Ministry of Interior and Ministry of Justice to study the Arab Convention on Regulating Status of Refugees in the Arab Countries.
Al Muraikhi added that Qatar is taking an active role to adopt an agreement that fits current developments. Speaking to Qatar News Agency (QNA) on the sidelines of a meeting that took place in the Arab League, the MoI official said that the current developments in the Arab region and the displacement of a large number of refugees as a result of it attracted a large interest internationally. He noted that the Arab convention was issued in 1991, but was not signed by the majority of Arab countries.
As a result, the Arab countries began re-examining the agreement in order to sign it. Al Muraikhi noted that the agreement will cover all the issues related to refugees and the cooperation between Arab countries in that context.
The Assistant Director of Legal Affairs Department also discussed Qatar's main propositions in the meetings and said that they presented the core articles of the agreement which were accepted by participating Arab countries. He noted that the agreement is in essence between the ministries of interior and those of justice in the Arab World. The current committee's recommendations will be presented during the upcoming joint meeting of Arab ministers of interior and ministers of justice.
Al Muraikhi chaired Qatar's delegation to today's meeting.
