Kuwaiti Minister of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs Mohammad Al-Nomes visited and pledged continuation of Kuwaiti support to a women's charity providing care for orphans in Thailand and toured a building constructed by Kuwait at the institution to review activities and services offered. The minister met the president of the society, discussed the management of the establishment and its system, and pledged continues ministry support. He told KUNA on Sunday that Kuwaiti support to the establishment dates back to 1965, a donation to construct the building housing the society back then worth USD 60,000. This visit, he noted, was suggested by Charge d'Affaires in Bangkok Omar Al-Kanderi. "I am proud of Kuwaiti support to charities in many countries across the world, including Thailand and Bangladesh, and the state and the ministry shall continue to support charitable work everywhere in the world, as urged by His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah." The Chairman of the society for her part said the strong relationship between the governments of the two countries go back more than 40 years, even before establishment of official diplomatic representation. She added she had visited Kuwait in 1965 when then Amir the late Sheikh Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah made the USD 60,000 donation for the society. She also met His Highness Sheikh Sabah when he was the foreign minister, and he had allowed her to receive donations back then, which yielded another USD 15,500. The society was founded and the headquarters inaugurated in 1967, sports a multipurpose hall, 16 classrooms, and facilities providing care and services for 480 children. The chairman added Kuwait also presented a donation of USD 71,000 for maintenance and refurbishing in 2006, and the work was completed in October 2008. The headquarters are currently used to host social and religious activities for the Muslim community as well, she said, and cultural events especially abound in the month of Ramadan, when Iftar banquets are also organized
