Four non-governmental organizations backed the constitutional amendments which aim at enforcing the right of society to security.
Manama Centre for Human Rights voiced the stance in a joint statement with three other NGOs, which include Bahrain Society for Public Liberties and Support to Democracy, Ma’an Society for Human Rights and Karama Society for Human Rights.
The watchdogs joined the statement which was issued by the President of Legislative and Legal Opinion Commission Abdulla bin Hassan Al Buainain, who hailed the National Assembly for endorsing the constitutional amendments by a sweeping majority of the votes.
“The regional shifts, international conflicts in the Middle East, mounting terrorist threats and the past terrorist attacks in Bahrain made it necessary to pass the constitutional amendments”, the statement said.
The watchdogs stressed the necessity of the recent constitutional amendments which give the military judiciary powers to deal with terror-related attacks targeting the military institutions, describing the step as crucial to protect society and ensure people’s safety.
The statement said that the endorsed constitutional amendments comply with the international covenants, citing particularly The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), a multilateral treaty adopted by the United Nations General Assembly.
