The cassation court in Cairo has upheld death sentences against 10 defendants convicted in the Port Said Stadium massacre.
As many as 72 fans of Al Ahly Sports Club were killed and 254 wounded in violence incidents that followed a game with Port Said's Al Masry Sports Club in February 2012.
Investigations revealed that the defendants had attacked the victims immediately after the match using knives and stones and had thrown some of them from the stands, and packed them into a small exit path while firing fireworks at them with deadly intent.
In June 2016, Port Said Criminal Court issued a ruling to sentence 11 defendants to death, 10 others to 15 years of rigorous imprisonment and 14 more to 10 years.
