U.S. senate confirms petraeus as CIA director

The U.S. Senate on Thursday overwhelmingly confirmed General David Petraeus-widely praised as commander of war efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan-to be the next director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). Lawmakers voted 94-to-0 to approve the nomination of Petraeus to succeed outgoing CIA Director Leon Panetta, whose own confirmation to take over for retiring U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates was approved unanimously by the Senate last week. The two votes translated to a strong show of confidence in President Barack Obama’s reshuffling of his national security team.
