Four-hundred sub-Saharan migrants have been stopped by Moroccan and Spanish authorities while attempting to illegally cross into Melilla through a fence at Beni Ansar, a town in Nador Province, Spanish news agency EFE announced on Monday.
Four migrants managed to successfully cross into Melilla over the fence, which is six meters high with cables crisscrossed between. One of the four migrants was arrested for injuring a policeman with bites and scratches, according to the same source.
The attempt was carried out around 6:10 a.m. on Monday.
Most of the migrants were stopped by Moroccan authorities, but 60 managed to approach the fence. The four that successfully made it over managed to overcome the anti-intrusion system, said the Government Delegation of Melilla in a press release.
Migrants in Morocco often try to force their way into Melilla and Ceuta, the other Spanish enclave on Moroccan soil, in a desperate attempt to reach Europe. In February around 850 migrants entered Ceuta, storming across the border over four days.
