Toothpaste is allowed to use while fasting, provided it doesn’t go down the throat, a latest fatwa issued by General Authority of Islamic Affairs and Endowments (GAIAE) in Dubai. The edict, however, said that it is preferable to use miswak to clean teeth, Gulf News reported. The daily fatwas are being released to help Muslims clarify any doubts related to fasting. The fatwa held that some scholars are of the view that use of miswak is not preferable after midday, clarifying that the view is inaccurate. Quoting a hadith by Prophet (PBUH) the ruling said:"The miswak is cleansing for the mouth and pleasing to the Lord". The fatwa goes on to explain the rule of using mouth fresheners such as small atomizers during the day in Ramadan .The fatwa says it is enough to use the miswak which the Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) has recommended whilst fasting rather than atomizers. There is no problem in using atomizers as long as nothing reaches the throat.
