The Dubai Community Development Authority organised a forum for those recovering from addictions, in co-operation with the Punitive and Correctional Department of Dubai Police. The forum involved the families of prisoners recovering from addictions, as well as members of the Ownak Social Rehabilitation Center.
Held in tandem with the Gulf Inmates Week in Dubai, the forum discussed addiction as a disease and the role that an addict’s family and acquaintances can play in his recovery. Family members of those who had recovered recently participated in the deliberations.
The forum also underlined the role of the family in ensuring that a person recovering from addiction can fully reintegrate back into society.
Dr. Huda Al Suwaidi, Director of Vulnerable Groups Department, underlined the importance of creating a culture in the community to facilitate such integration. He highlighted the issues in the post-recovery phase and the challenges and concerns faced by the families of those recovering.
The forum was attended by a number of experts in the legal, social and psychiatry fields. It also featured entertainment and a contest to promote social cohesiveness within families. Stressing the need for better communication, it also advocated learning from the successful experience of those who helped their sons recover.
