MP Mohammad Qabbany said in a statement Sunday that the suggestion of having each sect elect its deputy reinforces federal confessionalism, dubbing it as mass suicide. Maronite Patriarch Bechara Rahi brought pillars of the Maronite community together in a summit Friday which adopted an Orthodox suggestion proposing that each sect would elect its own candidate based on proportional representation during parliamentary elections. "This project could only be discussed when Taef Accord is fully implemented by founding two councils: non-confessional parliament and a senate elected on a sectarian basis," said the MP. Qabbany finally concluded that he did not plan on attending any Sunni meeting to discuss the electoral law.
