Princess Basma, president of the National Goodwill Campaign’s higher committee, on Monday presented assistance to underprivileged families in the Jerash and Ajloun governorates. The assistance included support for starting income-generating projects, school supplies, clothes, toys and sweets for 1,000 families, 400 children and nine charities. In Kufranjeh District in Ajloun, 70km northwest of Amman, the princess presented six charities with funds to start income-generating schemes, food parcels to 400 underprivileged families and schoolbags to 100 children. In Kitteh area in Jerash, 48km north of the capital, she presented two charities with financial assistance to start their own projects and handed out food parcels to 400 families. The princess also visited the Jerash Refugee Camp, where a charity received funds to start a production kitchen, and food aid wasdistributed to 200 families. At the Princess Basma Scout Camp in Dibeen, she distributed clothes, school supplies and sweets to 300 children. During her visit, the princess highlighted the importance of the goodwill campaign’s role in alleviating economic hardships for the underprivileged in cooperation with philanthropists. She stressed the need to improve the role of charitable societies in contributing to the eradication of poverty and unemployment, in addition to developing local communities. Launched in 1991 by the Jordanian Hashemite Fund for Human Development, the National Goodwill Campaign has grown over the years to become synonymous with support for the poor and the marginalised. It supports the less fortunate throughout the year and ramps up its charity efforts during the holy month of Ramadan.
