Emmanuelle Riva, aged 85 is making headlines as the world’s oldest Oscar nominee. Michael Haneke’s film Amour won Riva much acclaim at the Academy Awards for acting. Riva’s success has flown in the face of predictions from media pundits who never expected age and experience to triumph in an industry that prizes youth. Incidentally, Riva will compete the youngest yet Oscar nominee, nine-year-old Quvenzhané Wallis from the magical-realist Beasts of the Southern Wild. Riva first captivated audiences in the 1950s, and is best known for her performance in the 1959 Hiroshima film where she plays the role of an unnamed heroine.
