United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned on Thursday, the assassination of Co-ordinator-General of the People's Movement and National Constituent Assembly (NCA) member Mohamed Brahmi. According to statement made public by the UN Secretary-General Spokesperson "this heinous act must not be allowed to derail the progress that Tunisia continues to make in its democratic transition, including on the Constitution, and in meeting the social and economic aspirations of the Tunisian people." While calling for calm, Ban ki-Moon also denounces acts of political violence which, he estimates, "weaken legitimate State institutions, which underpin the democratic process." Mohamed Brahmi was assassinated on the Republic Day, Thursday, July 25, while leaving his house. This is the second assassination an opposition leader after that of Chokri Belaid, last February.
