Egyptian women were victims of harassment
Akram Ali – Cairo
Egypt’s national council for human rights reported 64 percent of women were victims of sexual harassment. The number makes Egypt the second worst country for verbal and physical harassment in the street, second only
to Afghanistan.
The council previously collaborated with a number of movements and organisations to arrange a monitoring campaign during Eid al-Adha mostly in downtown Cairo and metro stations.
The campaign succeeded in preventing a large number of harassment incidences in the area, sources said.
The council said some campaign volunteers were attacked by the harassers.
Nadeem and Mohannad Yasser, members of "Harassing the Harassers" campaign were assaulted in Attaba metro station. When they tried to file a report with the police, the officer refused, sources said.
Demanding adequate security, the National Council for Human Rights also referred to a “crisis” in the Egyptian street, where women suffer daily harassment.
The situation needs quick attention especially after several foreign countries began warning their citizens of possible harassment in the streets of Egypt, they said.
