The United Arab Emirates has launched an initiative at the UN Human Rights Council on the right of girls for equal education. The statement of the initiative was given by the U.A.E. Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva who emphasised the right of every girl to equal education and without discrimination.
The U.A.E. statement, endorsed by 67 member countries from different regional groups, said that good education at all levels was a prerequisite for sustainable development, eradication of poverty, gender equality and women empowerment.
The statement expressed concern over attacks on girls because of attending schools. It condemned in particular the attack on Malala Yousafzai in Pakistan in 2012. It also denounced systematic attacks on girls schools in Afghanistan and the abduction of 200 schoolgirls by Boko Haram in Nigeria.
