President Ali Osman
Khartoum – Abedalgoum Ashmeag
First Vice President Ali Osman, directed the Presidency of the Republic to form a committee to restructure radio, television and the Sudan News Agency (SUNA). He ordered reports on the subjects
to be submitted within one month.
This came after he met the Minister of Culture and Information Dr Ahmed Bilal Osman on Monday. The Culture Minister said the meeting reviewed his department's ongoing projects, the merging of corporations and priorities of the programme.
He said the upcoming period will witness a lot of change in radio, television and SUNA.
The First Deputy requested expediting the broadcast of Sudan Radio to Africa, it will begin its broadcast next year. He also said the Sudan News Agency requires updating to fulfill its role and functions. Finally he called on the Ministry of Finance to pay all radio, television and Sudan News Agency costs.
The reform plans adopted by the government to restructure media had been announced before. However, powerful people within the media opposed their implementation. The request of the First Deputy to expedite the implementation of the decisions of the Committee is an indication of the government's intention to achieve reform.
The Culture Minister was not worried about the new leadership of the Radio and Television Corporation, which will become one corporation in a month after a merger. The minister said that the changes will to give a chance to the new leadership and said restructuring does not target a particular person but aims to achieve required reform.
