Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, SKMC, has added yet another qualifier to its reputation for superlative healthcare excellence, inaugurating state-of-the-art interventional radiology technology that will introduce both increased treatment speed and safety for its patients while capturing information at a resolution four times greater than conventional x-rays.
Inaugurated yesterday by SKMC and SEHA management, the new bi-plane interventional x-ray system offers excellent insight for challenging diagnostic examinations as well as neuro-vascular and peripheral interventions, enabling physicians and other healthcare givers to work faster and more confidently, while providing cutting edge image-guided minimally invasive procedures.
SKMC, managed by Cleveland Clinic, is part of the SEHA HealthSystem and owned and operated by Abu Dhabi Health Services Company, SEHA, which is responsible for the curative activities of all the public hospitals and clinics in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
"SKMC's philosophy is ‘Patients First', and our choice to make this new and advanced radiology technology available to our patients reflects the hospital's mission to deliver physician-led excellence across all of our service lines, especially when we can make diagnostic components faster, safer, and more accurate," said Dr. Aref Al Shehhi, Deputy Chief Executive Officer, SKMC.
Interventional Radiology is a medical specialty that utilises minimally-invasive image-guided procedures to diagnose and treat diseases in nearly every organ system.
"The techniques used in interventional radiology offer new treatment options for many conditions, allowing patients to be treated with less risk and shorter hospital stays. This ensures positive health outcomes while enhancing patient experience," said Dr. Asim Khwaja, Chair of Radiology, SKMC.
In 2013, SKMC's Radiology Department performed approximately 123,000 exams and conducted close to 2,300 interventional radiology procedures.
