Products test positive for horsemeat
Several supermarkets in the UK have admitted to selling products containing horsemeat, with some pre-packaged meals even testing 100 percent positive for equine DNA.
The scandal was sparked last month when Irish food inspectors announced they had found horsemeat in some burgers stocked by a number of UK supermarket chains including Tesco, Waitrose and Sainsbury’s.
Tesco has been especially affected by the scandal after it revealed that some of its own brand Tesco Everyday Value spaghetti bolognese – an Italian pasta dish made from beef mince - was actually 60 percent horsemeat.
Tests also revealed that another spaghetti product manufactured by external company Findus and stocked in Tesco stores, was found to be 100 percent horsemeat. All the products have now been withdrawn from supermarket shelves.
The crisis has now spread all over Europe as politicians and food companies try to determine exactly how the horsemeat entered the food supply.
According to British newspaper The Daily Mail, the horsemeat may have come from a Romanian abattoir known for butchering horses.
