Cotton field
The undersecretary of Sudan's Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, Prof Mohammad Hassan Jabara has announced that over 80 percent of agricultural land was cultivated with genetically modified
cotton this year.
"Three types of cotton were cultivated in this yield," he stated.
Part of the "Rahad" agriculture project in the east of the country, the aim was to increase production while bringing down costs and improving quality.
Jabara said: "The ministry of agriculture has introduced modern technology with the help of Brazil in the field of cultivating rain cotton. We have been collaborating with Brazil in this field for a year, and have achieved good results by increasing cultivated areas and production."
He added: "The upcoming stage will concentrate on scientific techniques followed in all agricultural fields".
The minister said that heavy rainfall expected this year will help increase yields in peanuts, sesame and other crops.
"As long as we care about agriculture and do what we can for the sector, it will help solve our economics problems. Majority of the Sudanese population are dependent on agriculture, some completely so in certain states," he said.
