The American Museum of Natural History in New York is aiming to recreate the Ben Stiller film “Night at the Museum” by hosting its first-ever sleepover -- for adults.
Only instead of hot chocolate, guests will sip on champagne. And instead of Disney animated films, guests will be challenged to contemplate their place in the universe in a midnight showing of “Dark Universe,” narrated by Neil deGrasse Tyson.
It’s the grown-up version of a sleepover that indulges the childhood dream of every bookish adult who has ever fantasized about being locked up in museum or library.
And for one night next month, 150 adults will have their run of the place without having to jockey for space with other visitors. That means roaming the empty halls and coming face to face with herds of elephants and the 65-million year old T-Rex.
Activities and entertainment include live jazz music, a flashlight-led fossil expedition, and a presentation of “The Power of Poison.”
The $375 tickets for the event, which begins at 6:30 pm August 1 and ends at 9 am the next day, also include a three-course dinner, midnight snack and a light breakfast the following morning.
Before organizers turn the lights out, guests, who must be 21 or over, will be invited to change into their sleeping clothes (no pyjamas allowed) and unroll their sleeping bags under the shadow of the museum’s 94-foot (29 meter) blue whale.
While tickets for the August 1 sleepover are sold out, the musuem suggests that future sleepover dates will be scheduled.
