Bibliotheca Alexandrina
On the 10th anniversary of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the Calligraphy Centre has launched the Fifth International Forum of writings and inscriptions.
The Forum aims at studying the writings and inscriptions in the
cities and deserts of North Africa by presenting specialised lectures of scientific specialists in this field, as well as presenting researches and studies which are based on new archaeological discoveries.
The first two days of the forum will see a group of specialised lectures in inscriptions and monuments of different eras which include Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco and Mauritania.
The third day is dedicated to a field visit to the archaeological monasteries in Wadi Natrun, as well as Citadel of Qaitbay and Midan el Masaged (Mosque Square) in Alexandria.
Two areas will be focused on: the Egyptian-Libyn desert and the Sahara.
Those two themes include the documentation, publishing and surveying of Ancient Egyptian inscriptions including Coptic inscriptions, Arabic and Turkish inscriptions, Greek and Roman inscriptions, Libyco-Berber inscriptions in addition to the documentation, publishing and surveying Quarry symbols and Petroglyphs/rock art.
The third theme is about the use of modern technologies in the recording and restoration of writings and inscriptions in the cities and the deserts of North Africa”.
In 2007 the centre organised the third International Forum which presented a number of seminars about rock paintings since prehistoric eras up until the Arabic calligraphy era in several areas including Africa, Asia, Latin America and Australia.
In 2009 the Fourth International Forum had an exhibition named "Coins & Poetry C.P Cavafy". It studied the Greek poet’s relation to history, and in particular to coins. In his poems, the renowned poet C.P. Cavafy often made reference to historical personalities depicted on coins.
The event, which will take place on October 16, 17 and 18 is organised in cooperation with Alexandria and Mediterranean Research Centre (Alex Med).
