Yemeni authorities are investigating a suspected Iran-linked spy cell arrested last week. The suspected cell members are being interrogated before their trial, according to the military-run newspaper September 26.
Last week Yemeni authorities arrested what they said was an Iranian spy cell that had been working in Yemen for seven years. According to an official statement issued by the Yemeni government, the cell was run by a former leader of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
Yemen's foreign minister Abu Bakr al-Qirbi said there was a strong relationship between the Shia Houthi group and the IRGC, while President Abdu Rabo Mansour Hadi demanded Iran "stop interfering in Yemen's affairs, as Yemen does not interfere in the affairs of other countries."
In a speech delivered on Wednesday to the cadets of the War College, Hadi told Iran to take into account that Yemen was currently facing its own internal crises, and so does not need the Islamic republic to intervene in Yemen’s affairs.
Hadi also said the GCC-mediated initiative was the best solution for Yemen, as he believed military reconstruction based on national principles will lead the country to stability and security.
The September 26 newspaper revealed that an Iranian envoy will arrive in Sanaa next week to deliver a message to the country’s President from Iranian leader Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. The message is expected to be linked to the bilateral relations between the two countries after these latest developments.
In an official statement from the Iranian foreign ministry, the spy accusations were denied. The statement said: "governments which face popular protests against their failure in meeting their people's demands are trying to hide this failure by directing accusations at other countries."
