Western embassies advised their citizens in Beirut to avoid travelling to several areas in Lebanon, after security incidents witnessed recently, in light of the turmoil in Syria. The embassies said that these
are routine warnings, which was also confirmed to “Arabstoday” by the Interior Minister Marwan Charbel's
However, it is clear that the current warnings have included new areas which were not mentioned in the previous list of the banned areas, and that is due to the recent incursion by Syrian forces.
The British embassy advised its citizens to avoid travelling to the eastern border with Syria after repeated incursions by the Syrian forces in these areas, and to avoid traveling to the south.
The embassy said in the warning: "We recommend you to keep 5km at least away from the Syrian border, due to the several incidents occurred when the Syrian troops crossed the Syrian- Lebanese border, pointing out that “the incidents were violent and unexpected.”
Furthermore, the State Department renewed warning the American citizens from traveling to Lebanon due to the current circumstances, stressing that the American citizens who live and work in Lebanon are aware of the consequences of their stay in Lebanon
The statement pointed out the possibility of violent acts in Lebanon remains possible, specially as
The Lebanese forces are not able to protect their citizens or visitors from any unexpected violence.
The warning has also warned from the demonstration that may include violence, and the internal families’ clashes that might escalate into more violence and use of gunfire, it also added that that the U.S. government stuff‘s access can be very limited at cretin times.
Interior Minister Marwan Charbel has commented on the warning in a statement to "the Arabs today,"
He said: these warning are routine procedures that happen from time to time.He noted that it is the first time, they defined specific areas of the country, due to the tensed situation specially on the Lebanese- Syrian borders.”
Some other political sources read the warnings with a lot of concerns and considered it as a preparation for something in the near future.
The sources pointed out that these measures formed the reading of the future developments and the tension in the situation on the Syrian arena. They have also linked between these warnings and failure in the efforts made to continue the investigations regarding the kidnappings targeted foreigners in Lebanon.
Two killed in Baalbek
In addition to the political and diplomatic tension that Lebanon goes through, internally ,two people were killed in a clash between Jaafar and Rifai Families in Sharawineh Neighborhood in Baalbak on Thursday.
One person from Jaafar family was shot dead as youths from his family were trying to kidnap a youth from Rifai family in Sharawinah neighborhood in Baalbek, while a ten year old child was killed by stray bullets.
A Palestinian Child was killed by stray bullets in the armed clashes, where the army intervened to control the situation.
PM Najib Miqati followed-up on the clash and contacted Interior Minister Marwan Charbel and the Lebanese army Chief of Staff Gen. Walid Suleiman, demanding radical measures to contain the situation.
