Moroccan security forces have made major arrests linked to Al Qaeda in the Maghreb ahead of a meeting of a security meeting to be held in Brussels.
Algerian Minister Delegate in charge
of Maghreb and African affairs, Abdelkader Messahel speaking from Brussels spoke of Morocco’s breakthrough in the fight against terrorism. African countries will convene in February in a conference known as Algeria 2.
The statement of the Directorate General for National Security in Morocco said that the local police had doubled efforts to dismantle the terrorist cell linked to Al Qaeda.
A statement from the Directorate of Security said the investigations carried out revealed the person concerned was acting to attract and recruit people who wished to enter Afghanistan, Iraq and Somalia to carry out terrorist operations, and funding their travel and operations.
The same source said that the aprehended individual was kept under police custody, by order of the competent public prosecutor, in order to interrogate him about the acts attributed to him and before being brought before justice.
Media sources said that Abdelkader Messahel said during a meeting he was due to meet with the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Mali and Niger, and the Ambassador of Mauritania, with the head of European diplomacy Catherine Ashton andexpected the meetings to take place in Bamako or Niamey.
And will take place during this international symposium to discuss the situation in the region, particularly the collateral damage caused by the Libyan crisis, and the problem of proliferation of weapons in this country.
Algeria was said to have opposed Morocco’s presence at these meetings of Sahel countries.
Algeria wanted to take the lead in the fight against terrorism but recent circumstances and the development of events in the Tindouf camps and the Malian desert have made it reconsider its position.
