Port of Beirut
Beirut – George Shain
The Lebanese army has referred the crew of a ship by the name 'Lotfallah 2' and flying the Egyptian flag to the judiciary on Saturday. The ship was intercepted yesterday off the Lebanese
north coast. After a search, it was discovered to be carrying weapons. The ship had sailed from Libya and was heading towards Syria through the port of Alexandria in Egypt. The ship was transferred today to the naval base in Beirut under the supervision of the Lebanese navy.
Sources in the Lebanese army said that after searching the ship's cargo hold, they found various weapons, including rocket launchers, and large amounts of heavy and light weapons and explosive materials.
The weapons stash included Kalashnikovs, M-16 machine guns, RPG launchers, Lao launchers, artillery shells and various types of ammunition in addition to the highly explosive substance TNT.
Local sources reported that theLebanese army were preventing fishermen from approaching Selaata port in Tripoli, northern Lebanon, and that the army was deployed in the vicinity of the port after the arrival of three giant carriers designed to transport tanks, which are thought to have been standing by to offload the ammunition from the ship.
